The Blacksmith and the Toffee Maker – London pub goes vegan pt. 1

London’s vegan scene seems to be booming this January, from chain restaurants putting out Veganuary menus, to omni restaurants opening a vegan branch for the month (oh hi Arancini Bros). Most excitingly (for me at least) is that two pubs have converted their menus to be entirely vegan!

This past weekend I visited one of those pubs, The Blacksmith and the Toffee Maker.

The pub is not hard to find, less than 10 minutes walk from Angel tube station, which is also a nice area to walk off your meal if you’ve got some time.

The feel of the place is great, it looks like a pub and feels like a pub. It’s not fancy or immaculately decorated, just a nice space to go have some food, some drinks and a good time. They also have a pub quiz on Monday nights, which I am very excited about. I love a pub quiz, and one that serves vegan food (with 2 for 1 specials!!) while I’m quizzing, a dream!

I ordered the jalapeño and refried bean grilled cheese because I thought that sounded incredible and a combo that I had never tried before. Big surprise, turns out refried beans go perfectly in a grilled cheese! I also shared the mozzarella sticks to start and they were so so tasty, very filling, but the perfect salty gooey accompaniment to a pint. My husband and friends also tried some of the burgers and everyone was very happy with their meals.

Overall I had a great time at this pub and am so excited to return for a pub quiz and to try out some more of the menu!

  1. What a great review! I’m so gutted that I haven’t had the chance to visit this place. I grew up in the block of flats directly opposite this pub (and attended the primary school, also opposite!) and it’s always been a part of my life – I have memories of being there as a kid with my dad, devouring the pickled onions and playing with my brother – and now that it’s gone vegan I would have loved to make some new memories there. I’m pleased you enjoyed your food, everything sounds so delicious and creative, it’s so great to see so many places getting on board with Veganuary and veganism 😊🍔🧀

    1. Thank you!! Wow thats so awesome that your old local has gone vegan! You will have to check it out for sure.. I wonder if they changed much about the inside or just the food. If you go, you will have to let me know!
